Undergraduate Education Abroad

Study for one month in one of the world’s most exciting cities! Paris is a city rich in contrasts where the very old and the very modern coexist in harmony. Within days you’ll be able to navigate throughout its safe and sophisticated public transportation system and become one of its residents, rather than a tourist.

Courses are designed to take full advantage of the city’s abundant cultural resources. Outside of classes, you have ample opportunity to explore Paris at your own pace and discover for yourself some of its treasures. A daylong excursion to Normandy is planned to visit iconic D-Day sites, such as Omaha Beach and Pointe du Hoc. Three-day weekends give you a chance to travel throughout France and Europe if you wish.

No knowledge of French is necessary to participate in this program.

ART 491: Special Studies: Cultural Tourism

Tourism is a significant industry throughout the world.  It has the power to transform communities, economies, and environments. In this course, students will focus on cultural tourism, which examines the art, architecture, lifestyle, festivals, rituals and creative tourism. Utilizing case studies and field observations, students will consider how tourism and tourist practices can augment or diminish one’s understanding of another’s culture. Additionally, students will examine the role of tourism in cultural preservation and, in some case, degradation.

ART 491: Special Studies: Issues in Museum Management

The role of the museum in society is to conserve art and artifacts and make them available for the public through exhibitions. The first museum was believed to be in existence in 530 BC, yet modern museums still face unique challenges surrounding their purpose.  This course will consider museum issues including conservation and preservation; patrimony; repatriation; and deaccessioning.  Through readings, research, class discussions, and museum excursions, students will examine contemporary issues in museum management.

Humak University of Applied Sciences is arguably Finland's leading educator in the humanities and cultural management. Their degree program in Cultural Management trains professionals for careers in cultural event and organization management, private enterprises, cultural and art projects, as well as municipal and state cultural administration. The program also enables graduates to operate as entrepreneurs in the cultural and creative industry. Courses are offered in English in the field of arts and cultural administration, marketing, communication and Finnish language, media and culture.

Students will earn transfer credit from HUMAK. For all successfully completed courses, the credit hours, course title and course equivalency will be indicated on the UK transcript.

The program is available spring semester (beginning in January). 

The University of Applied Sciences Potsdam (UASP) is a young institution of 2,800 students located in the university city of Potsdam, just a few miles outside the German capital, Berlin. This exchange program is designed specifically for UK students majoring in Arts Administration and offers an invaluable opportunity to experience a very different approach to culture and the arts, and the teaching of arts administration. Courses are offered in English, and there is no German language requirement.

Students will earn transfer credit from UASP. For all successfully completed courses, the credit hours, course title and course equivalency will be indicated on the UK transcript.

Costs for Education Abroad programs vary often depending on the types of extracurricular activities that students chose to participate in while abroad.

For UK’s direct exchange programs with Humak University of Applied Sciences in Finland and the University of Applied Sciences in Potsdam, students pay their regular full-time tuition to the University of Kentucky. Costs are incurred for room and board as well as elective activities that students participate in.

Historically, the program fee includes

• Up to 6 credit hours of courses,
• Transfers to and from the Paris airport
• Accommodations at FIAP
• Two meals daily
• Excursion to Normandy
• Metro/bus pass
• Comprehensive medical insurance and
• security evacuation protection.

Students may utilize their financial aid packages toward Education Abroad programs.

UK Education Abroad Scholarship
A campus wide selection committee awards needs-based scholarships to UK students in amounts of $750, $1,000 & $1,500. The deadline to apply is March 1 for Summer/Fall programs and October 1 for Spring/Winter programs. 

Michael Braun Endowed Fund
Through the Michael Braun Endowed Fund, awards of up to $1,000 each will be awarded annually to students in the BA or MA in Arts Administration program who wish to enhance their educational endeavors by participating in an activity that enriches their knowledge of the arts administration profession or field including but not limited to, a study abroad program, an internship, a research or capstone project, or conference attendance.

Boren Awards
Supports graduate and undergraduate students studying languages, cultures and world areas critical to U.S. interests.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
Provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grants to study abroad.

Other external scholarship opportunities are available for students to use toward the expenses of their program such as travel, course credits, books and lodging. Students must apply for scholarships and some can be very competitive while others are underutilized.
